Alpine Bed and Breakfast

Past & Present

Originally known as the W.D. Kincaid & James Lewis Wade Home after its two original owners, Alpine Bed and Breakfast stands as a stunning example of a simplified Queen Anne Victorian Cottage. The property still features its original hardwood floors, ornate interior spindlework, original window transoms, historic glass panes, and beautiful beadboard panels. W.D. Kincaid owned and operated Kincaid and Altgelt, a prominent local general merchandise store, and constructed the home between 1887 and 1889. After selling his commercial business, Kincaid sold the historic residence to James Lewis Wade in 1905.

Wade and his wife, Elizabeth, raised eight children in the home. The family members were highly prominent in civic, educational, and religious activities, shaping the early growth of Alpine, Texas. Miss Electa Wade, one of James and Elizabeth’s daughters, never married or left the community. She remained in the house almost until her passing in 1993. Miss Electa took in boarders over the years, some of whom have reached out to Tom and Sharon to share fond memories of her incredible grace, hospitality, and kindness.

Following her passing, the Kincaid-Wade home remained a single-family residence, lovingly maintained and preserved by four additional families over the next 26 years. Tom and Sharon Kelner purchased the property in 2019, recognizing the pristine beauty, uniqueness, and architectural potential of the historic estate. Wanting to share this unique space with travelers, they began extensive historic renovations in January 2020 and opened the doors to guests that May.

With a meticulous attention to detail and a strict focus on guest comfort, Tom and Sharon have created a peaceful high-desert oasis in West Texas. Guests can unwind with premium 4-star hospitality, luxury lodging accommodations, and handcrafted food while exploring the Tri-County region. Our property serves as the perfect central hub for scenic day trips to Big Bend National Park, Fort Davis, Balmorhea State Park, Marfa, and Marathon. Come stay with us and experience a piece of Texas history!
